As per the survey, billions of people consider sanitation systems are either non-existent or ineffective. Most of the waterborne diseases are caused due to mixing of faecal matter into the rivers or any other water body. 1.8 billion people use an unimproved source of drinking water with no protection against contamination from faeces. Globally, 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. Combined with safe water and good hygiene, improved sanitation could prevent around 842,000 deaths each year.
Dealing with our poo properly is not only about averting danger, it’s also about seizing an opportunity. Poo, safely treated and reused, is ‘brown gold’. “Safely-managed sanitation services” generate jobs, investment opportunities, and valuable products such as energy and fertiliser. Shit can be converted in a goldmine.
To achieve sustainability, we need everyone’s poo to take a 4-step journey:
Containment : Poo must be deposited into a hygienic toilet and stored in a sealed pit or tank, separated from human contact.
Transport : Pipes or latrine emptying services must move the poo to the treatment stage.
Treatment : Poo must be processed into treated wastewater and waste products that can be safely returned to the environment.
Disposal or reuse : Safely treated poo can be used for energy generation or as fertilizer in food production.
Hence looking at the current situation about sanitation system Sanipreneurs are expected to come up with a rock-solid business plan with customer segmentation, market analysis, resources needed, capital investment and operating costs. The B Plan can be focussing towards one or more component of sanitation value chain which comprises of user interface, collection/containment, conveyance, treatment and reuse/disposal.
